As a photographer, I’ve always believed in giving back to the community that has given me so much. This February, I was deeply honored to receive the Service Award Medallion from the American Society of Photographers (ASP)—a recognition of service, dedication, and volunteer contributions within the organization. While I had every intention of attending the awards gala in person, a pesky broken arm (and a very inconvenient cast!) kept me from making the trip. Even so, receiving this medallion is an incredible milestone that means the world to me.
What Is the ASP Service Award Medallion?
The Service Award Medallion is presented to ASP members who have dedicated their time, expertise, and passion to serve and uplift the organization. Earning this recognition requires at least 25 service points, awarded for volunteer efforts that support the ASP’s mission and its members. It’s not just about checking off a list—it’s about fostering growth, mentorship, and a sense of community in the photography world.
Once awarded, the black-ribboned medallion becomes a symbol of that commitment, meant to be worn at photography events, presentations, and industry functions. And the service doesn’t stop there—continued contributions earn additional service bars, further acknowledging a photographer’s dedication to the profession.
Why This Award Matters
Photography isn’t just about capturing images; it’s about connection, mentorship, and elevating the industry for future generations. One of the aspects I love most about being part of ASP is the opportunity to mentor professional photographers every year. Helping others grow in their craft and navigate the industry is something I truly enjoy, and it’s a big reason why I dedicate time to this organization.
The ASP Service Award Medallion is a reflection of those who go beyond their own businesses to give back to their fellow photographers. It’s a reminder that success isn’t just measured by awards or accolades, but by the impact we make in our creative community.
Considering ASP? Accept the Invitation!
ASP membership is by invitation only—it requires earning a Master of Photography (M.Photog.), Master Artist (M.Artist), Master Wedding (M.Wedding) or Photographic Craftsman (Cr.) degree from Professional Photographers of America (PPA). If you receive an invitation, I highly recommend accepting it and becoming an active member. The opportunities for growth, mentorship, and community are truly invaluable.
Looking Ahead
While I couldn’t be there in person to accept this honor, my heart was absolutely at that gala in spirit. I am beyond grateful to be part of an organization that values service and community, and I look forward to continuing to give back in any way I can.
For those considering joining or serving within ASP, I can say firsthand—it’s worth it. The connections, the opportunities, and the ability to make a difference make this journey one of the most rewarding parts of being a professional photographer.
Thank you, ASP, for this incredible honor! Here’s to many more years of service and creativity.
